Static vs Dynamic ADAS Calibration

The Short Version
A static calibration is performed with the vehicle stationary. Printed targets are positioned in front of it at distances and heights specified by the manufacturer, the vehicle's centreline is established, and a scan tool walks the camera module through a routine that teaches it where straight ahead is.
A dynamic calibration is performed on the road. The scan tool puts the camera module into a learning mode and the vehicle is driven at a specified speed for a specified distance on a road with clear, continuous lane markings, until the module reports that it has gathered enough data and completed.
Plenty of vehicles need one. A meaningful number need both, in a specified order — usually static first to establish the baseline, then a road drive to confirm it under real conditions. Whichever it is, it is written into the manufacturer's service information for that model, and a shop following the procedure does not get to substitute the easier one.
What a Static Calibration Physically Needs
This is the one people underestimate. It is not a laptop plugged into the port; it is a measured setup with real physical requirements, and any one of them being wrong quietly corrupts the result.
- A genuinely level floor, not a sloped driveway
- Clear floor space ahead of the vehicle for the target frame
- Even, controlled lighting without glare or hard shadow
- A plain background behind the target
- Correct tyre pressures all round
- Fuel level and load within the specified range
- Nothing heavy in the boot or on the seats
- Suspension settled and ride height to spec
- The vehicle's thrust line established, not eyeballed
- Target height set to the manufacturer's figure
Several of those are about the car's attitude rather than the equipment. A camera aimed relative to a body that is sitting nose-down on soft front tyres, or tail-down under a boot full of tools, has been aimed to a posture the car will not hold on the road. This is why a competent technician checks pressures and unloads the vehicle before starting rather than after a failure.
What a Dynamic Calibration Physically Needs
Dynamic sounds simpler and often is, but it has its own list, and every item on it is a reason a job can be finished on the day or pushed to tomorrow.
- Clear, unbroken painted lane markings
- A road that supports the specified speed steadily
- Good visibility — no heavy rain, fog or spray
- Daylight for most procedures
- A clean windshield in the camera's viewing area
- Traffic light enough to hold speed without constant braking
- Enough continuous distance without junctions
- A route that avoids fresh milling and temporary markings
That last one is a live issue in this market. In July 2026 the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded Reeves Construction Company a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of I-520, the Bobby Jones Expressway, from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road, with projected completion on 31 May 2027. Milled pavement and temporary markings are exactly what a camera in learning mode struggles to read. It is a corridor to plan a calibration drive around, not through.
Why Some Vehicles Need Both
The two methods measure different things. A static setup gives the camera a precisely known geometric reference in controlled conditions — a target at a known distance, at a known height, on a known centreline. It is repeatable and it is unaffected by traffic or weather.
What it cannot do is verify the system behaves correctly at speed, with a moving horizon, changing light and real lane markings. A dynamic run does that, and it also lets some modules fine-tune parameters that only reveal themselves in motion. Where a manufacturer specifies both, the static pass sets the reference and the dynamic pass confirms and refines it.

Where This Can Be Done
Your driveway
Works well for a dynamic procedure — the glass goes in, it cures, and the calibration drive happens on nearby roads. For a static procedure it depends entirely on whether the surface is level and the space in front of the car is clear.
A workplace car park
Often better than a home driveway for static work. Flat, marked, usually plenty of clear space ahead of the bay. Direct low sun across the target is the thing that catches people out, so time of day matters.
An indoor bay
The controlled option, and the right answer for vehicles with demanding static tolerances or a plain-background requirement. Some jobs simply belong indoors and we will say so rather than force an outdoor setup.
Rural properties in the CSRA
Common across Burke, McDuffie and Lincoln counties, and around Aiken and Edgefield. Gravel and grass are not a static calibration surface. A dynamic run on a nearby marked road usually is.
The Order of Operations

Pre-scan
The vehicle is scanned before any work starts, so pre-existing faults are recorded and nobody argues later about what the glass job caused.

Glass out, glass in
Correct pane with the correct bracket, bonded with urethane and left to reach safe drive-away time before the vehicle moves.

Calibrate to procedure
Static targets, a dynamic drive, or both in the specified order. Vehicle prepared — pressures, load, fuel — before the routine starts.

Post-scan and report
A second scan confirming the calibration completed and no new faults are stored, printed or emailed to you as your record.
What a Failed Calibration Actually Means
Calibrations do fail, and a shop telling you that one failed is being honest rather than incompetent. The usual causes are mundane: the vehicle was not level, tyre pressures were off, the lighting was wrong, the lane markings on the drive route were too worn, or the glass itself has optical distortion in the camera window.
The right response is to fix the cause and run it again, not to clear the fault and hand the keys back. If a calibration will not pass on a particular piece of aftermarket glass, the answer may be different glass — which is one of the practical arguments covered on OEM versus aftermarket glass. What you should never accept is a car handed back with the camera fault simply erased.
Timing, Honestly
Add roughly forty-five minutes to two hours to the glass job for calibration, depending on method and vehicle. A dual procedure on an awkward vehicle can run longer. Weather can move a dynamic drive to the next dry window, and there is no way around that — a camera cannot learn lane markings it cannot see through spray.

Is one method better than the other?
No. They are different tools for different systems, and the vehicle manufacturer decides which applies. A shop that only offers dynamic calibration because it does not own target equipment is not offering you the better method — it is offering you the only one it can do.
Can a dynamic calibration be done in the rain?
Usually not. The camera needs to see lane markings clearly, and heavy rain, road spray and low light all interfere. Light drizzle on a well-marked dry-ish road is sometimes fine; a Georgia summer downpour is not. If we have to reschedule the drive we will tell you rather than run it and hope.
Why do you need to know my tyre pressures?
Because they change the car's ride height and therefore the camera's angle. Aiming a camera on a vehicle sitting low at the front on soft tyres calibrates it to a posture the car will not hold once the pressures are corrected. It is a small thing that produces a real error.
Does the calibration route have to be a motorway?
Not necessarily — it has to meet the specified speed and marking requirements, which many well-marked surface roads do. What matters is holding a steady speed on continuous markings for long enough. Stop-start traffic is the enemy, which is why time of day and route choice are part of the planning.
Will you show me proof it passed?
Yes — ask for the pre-scan and post-scan report and keep it. It is the only documentation that the procedure was carried out and completed. If you ever sell the car, or a claim is queried, that report is what you produce.
