Augusta is the anchor of a metropolitan area of roughly 629,429 people spread across seven counties and two states. Almost everything in the CSRA either runs through Augusta or runs around it on the loop, which means most of the glass damage in the region happens within a short drive of downtown even when the driver lives somewhere else.

The I-520 Resurfacing Is Making More Chips

In July 2026 the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded Reeves Construction Company a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of I-520, the Bobby Jones Expressway, running from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road. The projected completion date is 31 May 2027.

For anyone who commutes on the loop, that is the better part of a year of milled pavement, temporary lane shifts, loose aggregate and construction traffic on the busiest road in the metro. Milled surfaces throw grit. Dump trucks and haul trailers drop it. At 60 mph a fragment the size of a pea carries enough energy to put a star break in laminated glass, and the car in front does not have to be doing anything wrong for it to happen.

This is not new for the corridor. I-520 was widened from four to six lanes between Exits 3 and 5 in a $30 million project running from late 2011 to early 2013, and a $200 million upgrade between 2007 and October 2009 added the flyovers connecting I-20 west to I-520 east and I-520 west to I-20 west. Each round of work brings the same side effect. The practical response is not to avoid the loop — it is to get chips filled the week they happen instead of the month after.

Knowing the Loop by Exit Number

I-520 is a 23.34-mile three-quarter beltway, 15.62 miles of it in Georgia, and if you know the exits you can describe where your car is in one sentence when you call. Running clockwise from the western end: Exit 1 is the I-20 and SR 232 junction, Exit 1C Wheeler Road, Exit 2 Wrightsboro Road for Daniel Field, Augusta University and Paine College, Exit 3 Gordon Highway, Exit 5 Deans Bridge Road, Exit 7 Peach Orchard Road, Exit 9 Mike Padgett Highway, Exit 10 Doug Barnard Parkway for the airport, and Exit 16 Sand Bar Ferry Road before the river.

On I-20 the Richmond County exits are 195 at Wheeler Road, 196 at the I-520 and SR 232 interchange, 199 at SR 28 and Washington Road, and 200 at SR 104 and Riverwatch Parkway, with the state line at the Savannah River crossing beyond that.

The interchanges at Deans Bridge Road and Gordon Highway were both rebuilt from cloverleafs into parclos, which removed the loop ramps from I-520 onto those arterials. That is worth knowing because it changed the merge geometry at two of the busiest points on the loop, and merges are where windshields meet stone.

Gordon Highway and the Heavy End of Town

Gordon Highway is 22.8 miles long. It starts at the south-eastern edge of Harlem, out in Columbia County, and finishes at the Georgia–South Carolina state line on the north-eastern edge of Augusta. Its whole length is signed US 78 / US 278 / SR 10, and through the city it also carries US 1 and US 25 / SR 121. It serves Fort Eisenhower along the way, and the entire Richmond County section is on the National Highway System.

That NHS designation is not a piece of trivia. It means the corridor is formally recognised as carrying freight, and freight is what fills a windshield with small marks over a few years: open beds, tandem trailers, construction plant being moved between sites.

Two named heavy-vehicle destinations sit on this side of the county. Martin Marietta's Augusta Quarry operates in Richmond County with rail access for bulk material, and Clearwater Paper's Augusta paperboard mill — bought from Graphic Packaging in 2024 for around $700 million, and formerly an International Paper site — is on Mike Padgett Highway, SR 56, at I-520 Exit 9, producing solid bleached sulfate board. A quarry and a mill both generate truck movements around the clock, and truck traffic is the single most consistent supplier of rock chips in any market.

What It Costs in Augusta

Two numbers matter. A common aftermarket windshield, on a vehicle with no camera behind the glass, typically runs somewhere in the $300 to $500 range across the industry. Once you are into OEM glass and advanced driver assistance calibration, the industry average climbs to around $750. A chip repair is far cheaper than either, which is the whole reason to catch damage early.

Georgia's Rule on Driving with Damaged Glass

Georgia does not run a general vehicle safety inspection, so nothing forces you to fix a windshield on a schedule. What the state does have is a restriction on driving with damaged glass. Reported specifics include a crack larger than three inches, a starburst or spider-web break larger than three inches by three inches, damage in the driver's line of sight, and multiple cracks within three inches of one another. A violation can draw a citation or a fine.

Cameras, Sensors and Calibration

Augusta was named the top U.S. city for job growth in 2026 by LinkedIn, on the strength of cybersecurity, defense, healthcare, electric power generation and higher education. Job growth means newer cars, and newer cars mean a forward-facing camera bracketed to the windshield running lane keeping, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise.
