Auto Glass in North Augusta
North Augusta had 24,379 residents at the 2020 census and is around 26,000 today. It sits directly across the Savannah River from downtown Augusta and functions as an Augusta suburb in every practical sense — people live here, work over there, and cross a state line twice a day without thinking about it.
Geographically the city sits inside a triangle formed by the Savannah River, I-20 and I-520. I-20 is the main east–west artery through the region, running from Atlanta through to Columbia and crossing the river between Augusta and North Augusta. I-520 is the metro loop, known as the Bobby Jones Expressway on the Georgia side and the Palmetto Parkway here in South Carolina.
Being boxed in by three high-speed routes is convenient and it is also why local windshields take a beating. Interstate speed is what turns a loose stone into an impact. There is currently a major resurfacing project on the Georgia stretch of I-520, running from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road, with a projected completion date of 31 May 2027 — anyone commuting round the loop is driving through milled surfaces and construction traffic in the meantime.
65,500 Vehicles a Day Over the River
SCDOT's 2024 traffic counts make the point better than any adjective could. I-20 carries 65,500 vehicles a day on the segment between the Georgia state line and SC 230, West Martintown Road — the first exit on the South Carolina side, Exit 1. It is the busiest counted segment of interstate in Aiken County by a wide margin. It drops to 51,600 between there and US 25 at Exit 5, and 38,100 between US 25 and the I-520 junction at Exit 6.
That first number is the North Augusta commute, concentrated. Sixty-five thousand vehicles a day crossing a river bridge and funnelling into one interchange is exactly the volume, speed and lane-changing that puts stone into glass. The pattern also explains why so much damage here is picked up on the Georgia side of the line and paid for by a South Carolina policy.
The city itself is served by US 1, US 78 and US 278 — that is Jefferson Davis Highway — plus US 25, SC 121, SC 125 (Atomic Road) and SC 230 (Martintown Road). On I-520 the local exits are Exit 17 at Jefferson Davis Highway and Exit 22 at the US 25 Connector and SC 121, Edgefield Road. The 13th Street / Georgia Avenue crossing, the James U. Jackson Memorial Bridge, has linked the two downtowns since the 1890s.
Worth knowing about the Palmetto Parkway: the South Carolina half of I-520 opened in two stages. The $43 million first phase crossed the Savannah River to Jefferson Davis Highway on 22 June 2004, and the continuation east to I-20 opened on 16 December 2009. Together they run 7.72 miles of the route's 23.34-mile total.
One live item: SCDOT's 2026 Pavement Improvement Plan includes 2.09 miles of rehabilitation on West Martintown Road. The plan was approved on 22 May 2025 and covers 732 roadway miles statewide at a cost of $576 million. West Martintown Road is the road at Exit 1, which makes it one of the more heavily used approaches in the city.
The South Carolina Rule, and Its Expiry Date
This is the single most important thing for a North Augusta driver to understand this year, and most people on this side of the river do not yet know it has an end date.
Under South Carolina law, an auto insurance deductible does not apply to automobile safety glass for drivers carrying comprehensive coverage. South Carolina drivers have had that protection for 37 years, and it is why replacing a windshield here has felt effectively free for a generation.
That protection remains in place through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on windshield claims.
What that means in practice for people in Aiken County:
- Now, through the end of 2026. With comprehensive coverage, a windshield claim should not have your deductible applied to it.
- From 2027. Insurers are no longer required to waive it. A claim on a policy with a $500 deductible could mean paying most of a replacement yourself.
- Damage you have been living with. A crack you have driven around for months is worth dealing with while the current position still applies.
- It requires comprehensive coverage. Liability-only policies were never covered by the waiver.
The full explanation, including what to check on your policy, is on the South Carolina glass deductible change guide.
Which State's Rules Apply to You
This confuses people constantly in a metro split by a river, so, plainly: the rule follows the policy, not the road. If your vehicle is insured in South Carolina, the South Carolina position applies whether the stone hit you on the Palmetto Parkway or on Washington Road in Georgia. If you are insured in Georgia and commute into North Augusta, you get the Georgia position — no waiver, and your claim runs against your comprehensive deductible.

What It Costs If You Are Paying Directly
Worth knowing now, because after the change more South Carolina drivers will be paying out of pocket. Across the industry, a common aftermarket windshield without calibration runs roughly $300 to $500. Once you are into OEM glass and advanced driver assistance calibration, the industry average is around $750. A chip repair costs far less than either, and after 2027 the case for repairing early rather than replacing later gets considerably stronger on this side of the river.

Is my windshield replacement really free in South Carolina right now?
If you carry comprehensive coverage, state law means the deductible does not apply to automobile safety glass, which is why it has felt free here for decades. It is not a blanket entitlement — it depends on having comprehensive coverage in the first place — and it is due to change on 1 January 2027.
What exactly changes on 1 January 2027?
From that date insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on windshield claims. It does not ban coverage; it removes the requirement. Some policies may still offer favorable glass terms, but you will need to read yours rather than assume the old position still holds.
The stone hit me on the Georgia side. Does that matter?
No. What matters is where the policy is written, not where the damage happened. A South Carolina policy carries the South Carolina position across the bridge and back.
I only carry liability. What are my options?
The safety glass waiver has always applied to comprehensive coverage, so a liability-only policy will not help with glass. That makes early chip repair the sensible route, because it costs a fraction of a replacement and keeps your original glass in the vehicle.
Should I book now or wait?
If you already have damage and you carry comprehensive coverage on a South Carolina policy, there is no advantage to waiting and a clear disadvantage to crossing into 2027 with it unfixed. Cracks also spread on their own schedule, which rarely suits yours.
