Belvedere is one of the Aiken County communities that sits close to the Savannah River and the Augusta metro. Aiken County passed 168,808 residents at the 2020 census and has added more than 10,000 people since, and a good share of that population lives on this side of the line while working on the other.

US 1, Jefferson Davis Highway, carries 21,900 between Atomic Road and Belvedere Road. US 25 itself runs 12,700 between Jefferson Davis Highway and Atomic Road, and SC 126 carries 10,300.

None of those are big-city figures, and that is rather the point. Twenty thousand vehicles a day on a four-lane freeway at freeway speed is exactly the condition that flicks a stone off a tyre and into the glass behind it — enough traffic to keep loose grit moving, not enough congestion to slow anybody down.

SC 126 Is Proposed for Widening

SCDOT, working with the Augusta Regional Transportation Study, has proposed widening 1.87 miles of SC 126, the Belvedere-Clearwater Road, from Old Sudlow Lake Road to US 1 / US 78. The plan takes it from two lanes to four with a centre turn lane, and adds four-foot bicycle lanes and five-foot sidewalks on both sides, drainage upgrades, and a rebuilt culvert between Northside Drive and Woods Lane. The public notice is dated 2 September 2024.

It is a proposal rather than a live work zone, and we are not going to tell you the cones go out tomorrow. It is still worth knowing about, because widening is one of the more reliable predictors of glass damage on a corridor: milled surfaces, temporary shoulders, tracked material and plant traffic on a road that previously carried none. If SC 126 is part of your daily run, the sensible move is to deal with chips while they are still chips.

The South Carolina Position, Briefly

South Carolina law means an auto insurance deductible does not apply to automobile safety glass for drivers carrying comprehensive coverage. That has been the position for 37 years and it remains in place through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on a windshield claim.

If you have damage now, this is a straightforward decision: handle it while the existing rule applies. How Quickly This Can Actually Happen

The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on the glass, not on us. Here is what drives the timing.

• Chip repairs are the fastest. Nothing has to be ordered. The resin and the equipment travel with us, so scheduling is a question of finding a slot rather than finding a part.
• Common vehicles move quickly. High-volume models in mainstream trims are the easiest glass to obtain, which is why a popular sedan or pickup often gets a near-term appointment.
