One Metro, Two Sets of Insurance Rules

The Augusta–Richmond County metropolitan area holds roughly 629,429 people across the Georgia–South Carolina state line. Locally it is called the CSRA, the Central Savannah River Area, and the river in that name is also the border. That single fact changes what a windshield costs you depending on which bank you park on.

In South Carolina — Aiken and Edgefield counties — state law has meant that a comprehensive policy pays for automobile safety glass without applying your deductible. Drivers there have had that protection for 37 years. It remains in place through 31 December 2026, and from 1 January 2027 insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on a windshield claim. In Georgia — Richmond, Columbia, Burke, McDuffie and Lincoln counties — no such rule has ever applied. Your glass coverage is whatever your policy says, and many drivers here pay out of pocket because the repair costs less than the deductible. Georgia also has no general vehicle safety inspection, so nothing forces the issue annually. What Actually Breaks Glass Around Here

Augusta was named the top U.S. city for job growth in 2026 by LinkedIn, on the back of cybersecurity, defense, healthcare, electric power generation and higher education. Growth of that kind shows up on the road long before it shows up in a statistic: more commuters, more construction, more loaded trucks on roads that were laid out for fewer of them.

The clearest example is the loop. In July 2026 the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of I-520, the Bobby Jones Expressway, from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road. Projected completion is 31 May 2027. Resurfacing means milled surfaces, loose aggregate and construction traffic on the busiest loop in the metro for the best part of a year, and loose aggregate at highway speed is the single most reliable way to put a star in a windshield.

North and west of that, Columbia County is one of Georgia's fastest-growing counties, up 30% since 2010, with a Google data center being built at Appling and an Amazon fulfillment center at White Oak Business Park expected to bring more than 1,000 jobs to the region. South and west, utility construction runs along the 55-mile Thomson–Vogtle transmission corridor. Every one of those is a construction fleet on a temporary road surface.
