In July 2026 GDOT awarded Reeves Construction Company a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of I-520, running from the I-20 interchange down to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road. Projected completion is 31 May 2027.

Read that against the exit numbers and the relevance to Hephzibah is precise: the work zone does not cover your interchange, but it starts at the next one north. Anyone joining I-520 at Exit 7 and heading toward I-20 — which is most people going to work in Columbia County, or anywhere west — enters the resurfacing at Exit 5 and stays in it for the rest of the run.

Resurfacing means milled surfaces, temporary lane shifts, loose aggregate and a steady flow of plant traffic for the better part of a year, on a road where the normal speed is not slow. It is the single most predictable source of new chips in the metro between now and mid-2027, and it is worth adjusting following distance for rather than reading about afterwards.

The other thing sitting on this side of the county is Mike Padgett Highway, SR 56, at I-520 Exit 9, which carries the paperboard mill that Clearwater Paper acquired from Graphic Packaging in 2024 for around $700 million. A mill is a round-the-clock heavy-vehicle destination, and heavy vehicles are the ones carrying material that ends up on the road.

What Georgia Actually Says About a Damaged Windshield

This is the part Hephzibah drivers ask about most, and the answer has two halves.

There is no annual safety inspection in Georgia. No sticker, no test, no certificate to renew. Anyone telling you a cracked windshield will make your vehicle "fail inspection" here is describing a different state. Nothing external forces the repair.

There is a restriction on driving with damaged glass. The specifics reported for Georgia are:

• A crack larger than three inches is prohibited, particularly where it obstructs the driver's view.

"Line of Sight" in Plain Terms
