The Short Version

Chip repair is dramatically cheaper than replacement. A common aftermarket windshield fitted without calibration typically sits somewhere around $300 to $500, and the U.S. average once manufacturer glass and camera calibration are involved is nearer $750. A resin chip repair is a small fraction of either. It also keeps the factory glass, the factory bond and the factory calibration, which is worth more than most people realise on a modern car.

The catch is that the window for it is short. A chip is an open wound in the outer sheet of glass, and it does not stay the same size.

What a Chip Repair Actually Is

A windshield is two panes of glass laminated either side of a plastic interlayer. A stone strike breaks the outer pane and leaves a small cavity full of air, with fine cracks radiating out from it. That air is why the damage catches light and looks silver.

The repair puts a sealed bridge over the break, pulls the air out under vacuum, then forces a clear acrylic resin into the cavity and along every leg of the crack under pressure. The resin is cured hard with ultraviolet light and the surface is scraped flush and polished. What that achieves is twofold: it bonds the broken glass back together so the damage stops travelling, and it restores most of the clarity because resin and glass bend light in a similar way.

It does not make the damage vanish. Expect the break to become far less noticeable rather than invisible — usually a faint mark you have to look for. Anyone promising a perfect result is overselling it.

Which Chips Can Be Repaired

• Bullseye breaks — the clean circular cone
• Star breaks with short legs
• Half-moon and partial bullseye chips
• Combination breaks within size limits
• Damage roughly a quarter in diameter or smaller
• Breaks outside the driver's direct sightline
• Damage away from the bonded edge of the glass
• Fresh damage, ideally within days rather than months
• Chips that have not gone through the inner pane
• Glass with no prior repair at the same spot

Where it fails: anything long, anything that has reached the perimeter, anything sitting directly in front of the driver where residual distortion is a problem, and anything that has been open long enough to draw in road film, wax and dirt. Contamination is the reason an old chip repairs badly — resin cannot displace what is already in the cavity.

How the Visit Runs

1. Assess the break

   Type, size, depth, distance from the edge, and whether it is in your sightline. If it is not a candidate we say so before starting, not after.

2. Clean and seal

   The cavity is opened just enough to accept resin, loose glass is cleared, and a vacuum bridge is sealed over the damage.

3. Vacuum, then inject

   Air is drawn out of the break, then resin is pushed in under pressure until every leg of the crack has filled.

4. Cure and polish

   Ultraviolet cure, pit filled, scraped flush and polished. You can drive immediately — there is no adhesive cure to wait on.

Why Waiting Costs You the Whole Windshield

Glass expands and contracts with temperature, and a chip is a stress concentration. Every heat cycle works on it. In this part of Georgia the cycling is severe for most of the year: a car parked in the open all afternoon in July has a windshield far hotter than ambient, and the first thing many people do on getting in is blast cold air straight at it. That temperature differential across a damaged pane is exactly what turns a chip into a foot-long crack.

Winter runs the same trick backwards. A cold windshield with the defroster on full is being heated from the inside while the outside stays near freezing, and a chip that survived all summer can run right across the glass in one commute. Slamming a door on a closed car, a hard pothole, or the flex of a truck bed can each do it too.

What to Do Before We Arrive

Three things help. Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep water and dirt out — not duct tape, and not over the wiper path if you need the wipers. Avoid the temperature extremes: park in shade if you can, and do not aim the defroster or the air conditioning directly at the damage. And do not run it through a car wash, because pressurised water forces contamination into the cavity and can pop a marginal chip into a crack outright.
