Glass Work Around the Installation

Fort Eisenhower sits in Richmond County and is home to U.S. Army Cyber Command; the Augusta metro hosts the nation's largest government cybersecurity facility. That gives this corner of the CSRA a population unlike any other town on our list — large, young, highly mobile, and constantly turning over as people arrive and leave.

For an auto glass company, that turnover shows up in three specific ways: vehicles that have just been driven a very long way, insurance policies written in other states, and schedules that do not bend around a shop's opening hours. Mobile service handles all three, because the work happens where the vehicle already is and when you are actually free.

Still Searching for Fort Gordon? Same Place

Fort Gordon was redesignated Fort Eisenhower on 27 October 2023, in a ceremony on Barton Field. It was the last of nine U.S. Army installations to be renamed, and it now honours Dwight D. Eisenhower. Plenty of people locally still say Fort Gordon, plenty of paperwork still reads Fort Gordon, and the road outside is still called Gordon Highway. None of that is a problem — it is the same installation and the same service area.

Getting In: Gates, and the Roads That Reach Them

Gate 1, the McKenna Gate, is at Gordon Highway and Jimmie Dyess Parkway. It is open 24 hours, and is restricted to DOD ID card holders between 5 and 9 a.m. on weekdays. Gate 6 is on Gordon Highway, reached by way of Chamberlain Avenue, open 4:45 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it is the access point used for visitors, passes and commercial vehicles.

Jimmie Dyess Parkway is I-20 Exit 194 — SR 383, also signed South Belair Road, and the last Columbia County exit before the Richmond County line. Gordon Highway itself is 22.8 miles of US 78 / US 278 / SR 10 running from the edge of Harlem to the South Carolina state line, picking up US 1 and US 25 / SR 121 through Augusta. The entire Richmond County section is on the National Highway System.

That matters for a practical reason. Because we work at the vehicle rather than at a shop, the question is never whether you can get a damaged car to us — it is where you can meet us without a base pass being involved. Housing off Gordon Highway, an apartment complex, a workplace car park in Grovetown or Augusta, all work without anybody needing to clear an escort. Grovetown in particular is convenient: the installation's northern boundary is about two miles from the town.

Cross-Country Drives Arrive with Chips

A permanent change of station is often a drive of a thousand miles or more, much of it at interstate speed behind traffic you did not choose. Stone damage is close to inevitable on a trip like that, and the chip you noticed somewhere in Tennessee is usually still sitting there weeks after you unpack.

Deal with it early and it is a resin repair: the break is cleaned, the trapped air drawn out, resin pressed in and cured, and the factory glass stays in the vehicle. Leave it and the ordinary business of daily driving — a defroster on a cold morning, a speed bump, a door slammed shut — will eventually run it out into a crack you cannot fill. The price difference between those two outcomes is not small: a chip repair costs far less than a replacement, and a replacement runs from roughly $300 to $500 across the industry for common aftermarket glass without calibration, or around $750 on average once OEM glass and camera calibration are involved.

Out-of-State Plates, Out-of-State Policies

This is the question we get here more than anywhere else in the CSRA, and the state line makes it genuinely confusing.

South Carolina has had a rule for 37 years under which a comprehensive policy pays for automobile safety glass without applying the deductible. That protection runs through 31 December 2026, and from 1 January 2027 insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on a windshield claim. It attaches to South Carolina policies, so it is relevant if you live across the river in Aiken County rather than on the Georgia side.

Georgia has never had that rule. A glass claim here runs against your comprehensive deductible like any other claim.

A policy written in the state you moved from follows its own terms. Some carriers have a separate, lower glass deductible; some waive it on a repair but not on a replacement; some treat it as a standard comprehensive claim. There is no way to guess it from the outside — the answer is on your declarations page under comprehensive and glass. Vehicles That Sat While You Were Away

A car left standing for months comes back with its own list. Wiper blades that have been pressed against the glass in the heat leave marks and can drag grit on the first wipe. A small chip that was stable when you left may have grown through a season of temperature swings without anyone watching it. Door and window seals dry out, and a power window that was working fine can bind on the first few cycles.

Access to a military installation is controlled by the installation, not by us, and we do not make promises about getting through a gate. In practice that is rarely a problem, because the work only needs a parked vehicle and a bit of space: on-post housing if access can be arranged, your address off post, a friend's driveway, or a workplace lot on the Georgia or South Carolina side.
