The Two Numbers That Decide It

Glass damage is normally covered under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, not collision. Comprehensive covers things that happen to the vehicle without a crash: a stone off a truck, a break-in, vandalism, a falling branch, a storm.

So the decision is simple arithmetic. Compare the cost of the job against your comprehensive deductible. A common aftermarket windshield fitted without camera calibration typically runs in the region of $300 to $500. If your deductible is $500, filing gets you nothing at all — you pay the whole bill either way and you have opened a claim on your record for no benefit.

The picture flips on a vehicle that needs manufacturer glass and ADAS calibration, where the U.S. average is around $750 and some vehicles run well beyond it. Against a $250 or $500 deductible, that is a claim worth making. And a chip repair, being far cheaper than any replacement, is almost always below any deductible — though some policies deliberately waive the deductible on repairs, precisely because a cheap repair saves the insurer an expensive replacement later. Ask.

South Carolina: A Deadline Worth Knowing

This matters if you are in Aiken, North Augusta, Belvedere, Graniteville, Clearwater or Edgefield — that is Aiken and Edgefield counties, the South Carolina side of this market.

South Carolina law has required insurers to waive the deductible on automobile safety glass for drivers carrying comprehensive coverage. For 37 years that has meant effectively no out-of-pocket cost for a windshield claim in South Carolina. That protection remains in place through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, insurers are no longer required to waive the deductible on windshield claims.

Two practical consequences. If you are an SC driver with damage now, the economics of filing are unusually favourable and will not be after the new year. And from 2027, South Carolina drivers will be in the same position Georgia drivers are already in, weighing repair cost against deductible like everyone else. There is a full explanation on the South Carolina glass deductible change page.

To be completely clear: none of this applies on the Georgia side. Richmond, Columbia, Burke, McDuffie and Lincoln county drivers have never had a statutory deductible waiver and are unaffected by the change.

Georgia: What Applies Here

In Georgia, glass is covered under comprehensive on the same terms as anything else, with no statutory waiver. Some carriers sell an optional full glass endorsement that removes or reduces the deductible for glass specifically; if you drive a vehicle with an expensive calibrated windshield and you commute on I-20 every day, it is worth asking your agent what that costs.

Two other Georgia points worth knowing. There is no general vehicle safety inspection in Georgia, so nothing forces you to fix damaged glass on a schedule — but Georgia does restrict driving with cracks longer than three inches, starburst breaks larger than three inches by three inches, and any damage in the driver's line of sight, and that can draw a citation. The Georgia windshield law guide covers it properly.

What We Need to File

  • Insurance company name and policy number
  • Named insured, as it appears on the policy
  • Vehicle year, make, model and VIN
  • Date the damage happened
  • How it happened, in one sentence
  • Which glass is damaged and roughly where
  • Your comprehensive deductible if you know it
  • Whether a police report exists, after a break-in
  • Where the vehicle is and when we can access it
  • A photo of the damage, if you can send one

With that in hand we can contact the carrier or their glass administrator, get the claim set up and, where the arrangement allows, bill them directly so you pay only the deductible if one applies.

How a Claim Runs

  1. Price the job first

Before anything is filed you get a figure. That is the only way to know whether a claim makes sense against your deductible.

  2. Open the claim

Either you call your carrier or we contact them with your authorisation. Glass claims typically go to a dedicated glass line rather than a general adjuster.

  3. Authorisation and glass choice

The carrier confirms coverage and what it will pay for, including whether manufacturer glass and calibration are included. This is where to ask questions, not afterwards.

  4. Work done, carrier billed

We fit the glass at your address and invoice the carrier where the arrangement allows. You cover the deductible, if there is one.

Things Worth Knowing Before You Ring Your Insurer

You choose who does the work

Carriers frequently direct glass claims into a preferred network. Being steered is not the same as being required. If you want a particular firm, say so.

Ask specifically about calibration

Get it confirmed that recalibrating the forward camera is included. It is a real cost and it is the item most often missed in a first authorisation.

Ask which glass is authorised

Manufacturer-branded or aftermarket. Most policies fund aftermarket unless the vehicle is new or the policy says otherwise. See OEM versus aftermarket.

Repairs are treated differently

A resin chip repair is much cheaper for the insurer than a replacement, and some policies waive the deductible for repairs. Always worth the question.

One incident, one claim

A break-in that took a door window and the back glass is a single comprehensive loss with a single deductible, not two. Report it as one event.

Mechanical failure is not a claim

A regulator that simply wore out is wear and tear, not comprehensive. The same regulator wrecked by a break-in usually is covered, as part of that incident.

Will Filing Put My Premium Up?

Comprehensive glass claims are widely treated as no-fault and are generally regarded as among the least damaging claims you can make. That said, nobody outside your insurer can promise what your renewal will look like, and it is not our place to tell you it will certainly be unaffected. What we can tell you is the real cost of the job, so you can weigh a known number against an uncertain one.

If the job costs less than or close to your deductible, the honest answer is usually not to file at all. We say that fairly often, and it costs us nothing to say it.

Related Work

The jobs people most often claim for are windshield replacement, door glass after a break-in and rear glass. The single biggest variable in a windshield claim is ADAS calibration, and the cost side of that is on calibration cost and insurance. If you are deciding between repair and replacement, see the repair or replacement guide.

Auto Glass Insurance FAQ

Is windshield damage a comprehensive or collision claim?

Comprehensive, in almost every case. Comprehensive covers damage that happens without a collision — road debris, vandalism, break-ins, storms and falling objects. Glass broken in a crash goes under collision as part of that claim instead.

Do South Carolina drivers still pay nothing for a windshield?

Through 31 December 2026, drivers with comprehensive coverage benefit from the state's safety glass deductible waiver. From 1 January 2027 insurers are no longer required to waive it. That applies to Aiken and Edgefield counties on this side of the market, and not to the Georgia counties at all.

Can my insurer make me use their glass shop?

Insurers commonly steer glass claims to a network, but steering is not the same as an obligation. What the policy will pay for is a separate question from who does the work. If you want a particular firm, tell the carrier when you open the claim.

Will my insurance pay for manufacturer-branded glass?

Sometimes, and it depends on the policy. Many fund aftermarket glass as standard and cover branded glass only on newer vehicles or where the policy specifically provides for it. Ask before the work is authorised rather than after.

Does insurance cover the ADAS calibration too?

Usually, where the vehicle requires it, since a windshield replacement is not complete without it. It is the item most often left out of a first authorisation, so it is worth confirming explicitly. More detail on calibration cost and insurance.

Should I claim for a chip repair?

Often there is nothing to claim, because the repair costs less than a typical deductible. Some policies waive the deductible on repairs specifically, which makes it free to you and saves the insurer a replacement later. It takes one phone call to your carrier to find out which applies.
