What It Costs

Two numbers are worth knowing before you call anyone. A common aftermarket windshield on a vehicle with no camera behind the glass typically runs somewhere in the region of $300 to $500 fitted. Once advanced driver assistance calibration and manufacturer-branded glass are in the mix, the U.S. average climbs to around $750, and on some vehicles well past it.

Those are industry ranges, not a quote for your car. What actually moves your number is short: which glass the vehicle takes, whether a camera has to be re-aimed afterwards, and whether the part is on a shelf in the CSRA or has to be freighted in. We give you the figure on the phone, and it does not change on arrival unless we find something we could not see — rusted pinchweld, a previous bad fit — in which case we stop and tell you before carrying on.

Will Insurance Pay?

If you carry comprehensive cover, glass damage is normally a comprehensive claim rather than a collision one. Whether it is worth filing comes down to arithmetic. A $500 deductible against a $400 job means you are paying for it either way, and you have opened a claim for nothing.

South Carolina is a special case that matters to Aiken and Edgefield county drivers. State law has waived the deductible on automobile safety glass for drivers carrying comprehensive cover, and that protection runs through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 insurers are no longer required to waive it. That change does not touch the Georgia counties. How the Job Runs

1. Identify the exact glass

   Year, make, model, trim, and the options that change the part — rain sensor, heated element, head-up display, acoustic interlayer, lane camera. VIN settles it.

2. Quote and book

   Price, timescale, and whether calibration is part of it. If the glass is stocked locally, this can often be the same day.

3. Cut out and prep

   The old glass comes out, the old urethane is trimmed back to a thin bed, and the pinchweld is cleaned and primed. Skipping the prep is how leaks start.

4. Set, cure, calibrate

   New glass set, trim refitted, and a stated safe drive-away time. If a camera looks through the windshield, calibration follows before the car is used normally.

The Part People Underestimate: Cure Time

A windshield is structural. It braces the roof in a rollover and it is the backstop the passenger airbag inflates against. The urethane holding it in has to reach a minimum strength before the vehicle is safe to drive, and that is the safe drive-away time.

It is not a fixed number. Adhesive chemistry, temperature and humidity all move it, which in this climate means a July afternoon in Augusta and a damp January morning in Lincolnton are not the same job. We tell you the figure for the adhesive actually used on your car, not a generic one. Plan to leave the vehicle sitting for that period, keep a window cracked for the first day so pressure changes do not push on the fresh bond, and leave the retention tape on if any is applied.

ADAS: Where the Money Usually Goes

If your vehicle has lane keeping, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking or traffic sign recognition, there is almost certainly a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield. Move the glass and you move the camera's aim. A fraction of a degree at the bracket becomes a large error at the distance the camera is judging.

That is why calibration is a separate step with its own cost, and why two quotes for "a windshield" can differ by hundreds of dollars — one of them may simply be leaving it out. Ask. When Replacement Is the Right Call

Why the CSRA Is Hard on Windshields

This is not a quiet market for glass damage. I-20 carries traffic between Atlanta and Columbia straight through the metro and across the Savannah River, and I-520 — the Bobby Jones Expressway on the Georgia side, the Palmetto Parkway in South Carolina — loops the whole city. In July 2026 the Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of the Bobby Jones between the I-20 interchange and Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road, with completion projected for 31 May 2027. Resurfacing means milled pavement, loose aggregate and construction traffic on the busiest loop in the metro for the best part of a year.

Add the construction boom around it. Columbia County has grown roughly 30% since 2010, Google is the confirmed operator of the data centre at Appling, and an Amazon fulfilment centre at White Oak Business Park is expected to bring over a thousand jobs to the region. That is a lot of gravel haulers, dump trucks and pickups running off unpaved site roads onto public ones, and gravel on tarmac is where windshield damage begins.
