Why Side Glass Shatters Into Pellets

Your windshield and your side windows are made of two different materials, and the difference explains almost everything about this job.

A windshield is laminated — two sheets of glass bonded either side of a plastic interlayer. Hit it and it cracks but stays in one piece, which is exactly what you want in front of your face at speed. Door glass is tempered: heat-treated so that when it fails it fails completely, disintegrating into thousands of small blunt-edged cubes rather than long shards. That is a deliberate safety choice, because a side window is next to your head and needs to be survivable if you go through it.

The consequence is that side glass cannot be repaired. There is no chip to fill and no crack to stabilise — the pane either exists or it does not. If your door glass is broken, it is a replacement, full stop.

What It Costs

Side glass is generally a good deal less expensive than a windshield. There is no laminate, no camera bracket, no rain sensor and no structural bond to cure, and there is no ADAS calibration — the driver assistance cameras look forward through the windshield, not sideways. For reference, a common aftermarket windshield fitted without calibration typically runs around $300 to $500, and side glass usually sits below that.

Two things push the number up. Laminated side glass, which some manufacturers now fit to front doors for noise reduction and security, costs more than tempered. And glass with integrated features — a heating element, a privacy tint, an embedded antenna, an unusual shape on a coupe — is more expensive and less likely to be stocked locally. We will tell you which yours is when you call.

On insurance, a smashed window from a break-in is a comprehensive claim in most policies. Whether it is worth filing depends on your deductible against the repair cost, and side glass is often cheap enough that filing makes no sense. The arithmetic is on insurance claims.

The Real Work Is the Cleanup

Fitting the new pane takes a fraction of the visit. Clearing the old one takes the rest.

When a tempered window lets go, most of the glass falls straight down inside the door shell, on top of the regulator, the motor, the lock mechanism and the drain holes. The rest goes into the cabin: down the seat rails, into the seat belt reel slot, under the carpet, into the door pocket, into the demister vents and along the window channel.

Leave it and it makes itself known for years. Loose pellets rattling in the door skin, blocked drain holes that leave water standing at the bottom of the door and start rust, and stray fragments jamming the regulator. Getting the door card off and vacuuming the cavity properly is the difference between a proper repair and a pane of glass stuck in a hole.

  • Door trim card removed and vapour barrier lifted
  • Door cavity vacuumed out completely
  • Drain holes cleared
  • Regulator and motor checked for damage
  • Window run channel and felts cleaned
  • New tempered or laminated pane fitted to spec
  • Glass aligned so it seals against the seal
  • Seat rails, carpet and door pocket vacuumed
  • Seat belt reel slot cleared
  • Trim, vapour barrier and card refitted correctly
  • Window travel and auto-up function tested
  • Lock and mirror wiring reconnected

How the Visit Runs

  1. Identify the pane

Which door, which side, and whether it is tempered or laminated. Year, make, model and body style, and privacy tint if fitted.

  2. Quote and schedule

Common door glass is often available same day. If the car is unsecured we will tell you how to board it up safely in the meantime.

  3. Strip and clear

Door card off, cavity vacuumed, drains cleared, mechanism inspected. This is the part that takes the time and the part cheap jobs skip.

  4. Fit, test, tidy

New glass set into the regulator, aligned, trim refitted, window cycled fully up and down, and the interior vacuumed before we leave.

What to Do Before We Arrive

Do not press the window switch

The most useful thing you can do. Running the regulator with broken glass sitting in the channel drags fragments through the mechanism and can turn a glass job into a regulator replacement.

Cover it, do not seal it

Heavy plastic sheet and tape on the outside of the frame, not on the paint if you can help it. It keeps rain out overnight. It will not keep anyone out, so do not leave anything in the car.

Photograph it first

If you are filing a claim or a police report after a break-in, take pictures before anything is touched or cleaned up. It costs nothing and it saves arguments later.

Wear gloves if you sweep

Tempered pellets are blunter than shards but still cut. A stiff brush and a shop vacuum handle the loose material; leave the door cavity to us.

Check the seat belt

Glass in the belt reel slot is common and easy to miss. If the belt is slow to retract afterwards, say so — that is usually fragments, not a fault.

Do not drive far with it open

Airflow through an open aperture blows remaining fragments around the cabin at speed. Short trips only until it is properly cleared.

Which Windows This Covers

Front door glass and rear door glass on both sides, on cars, pickups, SUVs and vans. Frameless coupe and convertible windows too, which need more care on alignment because the glass seals against the roof rather than a fixed frame.

Two neighbouring jobs often come up alongside it. The small fixed triangular or wedge panes behind the doors and in extended-cab pickups are quarter glass — a related but separate part, often bonded rather than dropped into a channel. And the back glass is rear windshield replacement, which is also tempered and produces the same cleanup problem on a larger scale.

Door and Side Glass FAQ

Can a cracked side window be repaired instead of replaced?

No. Tempered glass has no laminate to bond to and no contained cavity to fill, and in practice it does not crack — it disintegrates. If a side window has failed, the only option is a new pane. Repair applies to laminated windshields.

How long does a door glass replacement take?

Usually around an hour, sometimes a little more if the cavity is heavily contaminated or the door card is awkward. There is no adhesive cure on a standard drop-in pane, so you can drive as soon as it is done.

Will you get all the glass out?

We take the door card off and vacuum the cavity, the channels and the interior. Being honest about it: after a bad break a stray pellet can still turn up weeks later from under a seat runner. What matters is that the door shell, the drains and the mechanism are clear, because that is where leftover glass causes actual damage.

Is a broken window covered by insurance?

Under comprehensive cover, usually yes — a break-in is a classic comprehensive claim. Whether filing makes sense is a different question, because side glass often costs less than a typical deductible. Work out the arithmetic before you open a claim.

Do I need a police report after a break-in?

Many insurers ask for one when property has been stolen, and it is generally worth filing regardless. It does not affect the glass work, but it is easier to obtain on the day than a week later.

My window went up crooked after the new glass. Why?

Usually alignment in the regulator clamps, which is adjustable, or debris still in the run channel. Occasionally the regulator itself was damaged when the glass broke. Either way it is fixable — call and we will come back to it.
