Ram 1500 Windshield Replacement in Augusta and the CSRA
The truck with the year-model trap. Ram sold two different generations side by side for years, and the glass is not the same.

The Ram 1500 Classic Problem
Start here, because it catches out more Ram owners than any other single thing. When Ram launched its current-generation 1500, it did not stop building the previous one. The older truck continued in production alongside the new one, sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, for several years.
That means "2020 Ram 1500" describes two structurally different trucks. They have different bodies, different apertures and different windshields, and telling us the model year alone does not narrow it down. A quick visual cue helps — the Classic wears the older, squarer cab and the crosshair-era proportions, while the current truck has the taller, more sculpted front end and a much larger interior screen on most trims. But the reliable answer is the VIN, and that is what we ask for.
What Can Be On the Glass
Where the driver assistance package is fitted, the forward-facing camera sits behind the rear-view mirror looking through a clear window in the black frit. That camera handles lane keeping, lane departure warning and forward collision functions, and it is what requires recalibration when the pane is replaced.
Adaptive cruise control on Ram trucks generally works from a radar unit at the front of the vehicle rather than the windshield camera, so having adaptive cruise does not by itself prove there is a camera. Lane keeping does.
- Forward camera bracket behind the mirror
- Rain and light sensor on equipped trims
- Acoustic interlayer on upper trims
- Humidity sensor for automatic climate
- Heated wiper park strip where fitted
- Head-up display wedge layer where fitted
- Solar or infrared-reflective coating
- Auto-dimming mirror mount and wiring
- Shade band at the top of the glass
- Clear frit window for the camera's view
As with every mainstream truck, availability of each item depends on trim, package and model year rather than on the nameplate. A Tradesman bought for site work and a Limited bought for towing a horse trailer around Aiken County are the same truck in name only as far as the windshield is concerned.
Acoustic Glass and Why It Matters on This Truck
Ram has leaned hard on cabin quietness as a selling point for its upper trims, and acoustic laminated glass is part of how that is achieved. An acoustic windshield has a sound-damping layer sandwiched into the laminate that absorbs a slice of the frequency range wind and tyre noise live in.
The consequence for a replacement is simple and often overlooked. Fit non-acoustic glass to a truck that came with acoustic glass and nothing breaks, no light comes on, and nothing fails — the cabin is just noticeably louder from that day forward. On a truck bought specifically because it was quiet, that is a genuine loss of the thing you paid for. Ask whether the quote is for acoustic glass. If nobody mentions it, assume it is not.
Recalibration After Replacement
If there is a camera behind the mirror, the truck needs recalibrating. The camera's aim is referenced to the windshield it was bonded to; a new pane in fresh urethane sits at a marginally different height and rake, and the camera is now looking at a different patch of road than its software believes.
Whether that means a static setup with targets, a dynamic drive, or both, is determined by the manufacturer's procedure for that build. We cover both methods on static versus dynamic calibration. On a pickup specifically, ride height is part of the setup: an empty bed, correct tyre pressures and no unusual load make a static calibration meaningful. Aftermarket suspension is worth mentioning up front.
Chip Repair Is Still the Cheapest Answer
If the damage is a chip and not yet a crack, and it is not in the camera's viewing window or your direct line of sight, a resin repair keeps the original glass in the truck. Nothing is unbonded, the camera does not move, and no calibration is needed. That is the whole bill avoided rather than reduced.
The window for that closes quickly, particularly in this climate. Heat expands the glass around the damage, air conditioning cools it fast from the inside, and a chip that has survived weeks can run into a foot-long crack in a single afternoon. See windshield chip repair and chip repair or replacement.
Where Rams Meet Rocks in the CSRA
Two things concentrate windshield damage in this market. The first is construction. In July 2026 GDOT awarded Reeves Construction Company a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of I-520, the Bobby Jones Expressway, from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road, projected complete on 31 May 2027 — nine months of milled surface and loose aggregate on the metro's main loop.
The second is growth. Columbia County population is up 30% since 2010, Evans stands at 39,727 and Grovetown at 18,803 as of 2026, and the county has a Google-operated data centre in Appling plus an Amazon fulfilment centre at White Oak Business Park expected to bring over 1,000 jobs. Every one of those sites means haul trucks, gravel approaches and pickups running between them. Rams do a lot of that running.
Work Trucks and Fleets
A Ram earning its keep is worth more on the road than in a queue. We fit at your yard, your site or your driveway, which turns a half-day errand into the length of the job itself. Several trucks in one visit is straightforward to arrange. See fleet and commercial auto glass.
What to Have Ready When You Call
-
The VIN
Non-negotiable on this truck because of the Classic overlap. Bottom of the windshield driver's side, or the door jamb sticker.
-
Trim level
Tradesman through Limited changes the acoustic glass, sensor and camera picture substantially.
-
Behind the mirror
Camera pod, rain sensor, both or neither. Look up from the driver's seat before you dial.
-
Damage and location
Size, position and whether it has started to run. Plus where the truck will be parked for the appointment.

How do I know if mine is a Classic?
The VIN is the definitive answer, and reading it to us over the phone takes a moment. Visually, the Classic carries the older squarer cab and the previous-generation dashboard, while the current truck has the taller front end and the large portrait screen on most trims. If you are unsure, we will confirm from the VIN before ordering.
Will I notice if I get non-acoustic glass?
On a quiet upper-trim Ram, most people do. Nothing malfunctions — the cabin is simply louder at highway speed than it was, permanently. It is worth asking explicitly whether a quote covers acoustic glass, because it is rarely volunteered.
Does a camera behind the mirror always mean calibration?
If the glass is replaced, effectively yes. The camera's reference surface leaves with the old pane. It may not throw a fault, and that is precisely why the calibration is done to procedure rather than skipped because nothing looks wrong.
Can you fit glass with a bed cover or rack on the truck?
Yes, none of that interferes with the windshield. What does matter is weight in the bed if a static calibration is required, because it changes the ride height the camera is being aimed at. Unload it beforehand if you can.
Do you cover the South Carolina side?
Yes — Aiken, North Augusta, Belvedere, Graniteville, Clearwater and Edgefield. Worth knowing if your policy is a South Carolina one: the state's safety glass deductible provision remains in place through 31 December 2026 and changes on 1 January 2027. See the deductible change.
