The Commuter Car Problem
The Accord is a distance car. It gets bought by people who drive it a great deal, mostly on main roads, at speed, behind other traffic. That is precisely the exposure profile that produces windshield chips: a stone flicked up by a vehicle two cars ahead has plenty of energy by the time it reaches you at 65 miles an hour.
In this market that means I-20 and the Bobby Jones Expressway, and it means the daily commute across the Savannah River between Augusta and North Augusta. It also means the I-520 resurfacing: in July 2026 GDOT awarded Reeves Construction Company a $14.08 million contract to resurface 5.21 miles of the Bobby Jones from the I-20 interchange to Exit 5 at Deans Bridge Road, with projected completion on 31 May 2027. Milled surfaces and loose stone on a commuter loop for nine months produce a lot of chipped sedans.
Honda Sensing and the Camera Behind the Mirror
Honda's driver assistance suite is branded Honda Sensing. Where it is fitted, a forward-facing camera sits behind the rear-view mirror looking out through a clear window in the black frit border, and it handles lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation, the collision mitigation braking system and traffic sign recognition on cars that have it.
Honda has extended this package across a large proportion of its range over recent years, so the sensible default assumption on a modern Accord is that a camera is present until you have looked and confirmed otherwise. That said, availability still depends on trim, package and model year, and older Accords predate the system entirely. Look behind your mirror, then give us the VIN and we will confirm it properly.
- Forward camera bracket behind the mirror
- Rain and light sensor on equipped trims
- Acoustic interlayer on upper trims
- Head-up display wedge layer on trims that have HUD
- Humidity sensor for automatic climate
- Auto-dimming mirror mount and wiring
- Shade band across the top of the glass
- Solar or infrared-reflective coating
Why Accord Calibration Often Takes Longer
Honda's published procedures for camera calibration commonly involve more than one step. Depending on the model and the specific system, the service information may call for a target-based setup in controlled conditions and a road drive at a specified speed to complete the routine.
That is not a shop padding the bill. It is the manufacturer's procedure, and following it is the difference between a camera that is properly referenced and one that has merely been told it is. The practical consequence for you is time: a dual procedure adds more to the appointment than a single one, and the road-drive half depends on weather and traffic. If it is raining hard, the drive waits. We explain both methods on static versus dynamic calibration.
Acoustic Glass on Upper Trims
Honda has used acoustic laminated glass to keep the Accord's cabin quiet on higher trims. The pane carries a sound-damping layer inside the laminate that takes the edge off wind and road noise. It is one of the reasons the car feels more expensive than its price on a long drive.
If yours has it and it is replaced with a standard pane, nothing will warn you. No light, no fault, no failure — just a noisier car from that day onward, on a vehicle whose main virtue is that it is pleasant over distance. It is worth asking explicitly whether an acoustic pane is what has been quoted, because it is rarely volunteered and it is not something you can add later.
Head-Up Display Where Fitted
Honda has offered a head-up display on some Accord trims. Where one is present, the windshield carries a wedge-shaped interlayer that varies in thickness so the two surface reflections converge into a single image. Fit ordinary glass and the projected display is permanently doubled and cannot be corrected. If speed appears to float above the bonnet when you drive at night, mention it before anything is ordered.
Repair Instead of Replace, Where You Can
On a car with a camera, a chip repair is worth substantially more than the price of the repair, because it avoids the replacement and the calibration together. The original glass stays bonded in place, the camera never moves, and there is nothing to recalibrate.
The usual limits apply. Damage in the camera's viewing window is a replacement even when small, because a resin repair leaves optical change exactly where the system tolerates it least. Damage directly in the driver's line of sight is the same story for the same reason. And once a chip has run into a crack, particularly one reaching an edge, repair is no longer the right answer. See windshield chip repair and chip repair or replacement.
The Legal and Insurance Position
Georgia has no general vehicle safety inspection, so there is no annual test to fail. What Georgia does restrict is driving with a damaged windshield: cracks larger than three inches, starburst or spider-web damage larger than three inches by three inches, damage in the driver's line of sight and multiple cracks within three inches of each other are prohibited and can result in a citation. Full detail on the Georgia cracked windshield law.
On insurance, comprehensive cover normally handles glass, and where it covers a replacement it usually covers the calibration as well, since recalibration is part of completing the job properly. If your policy is a South Carolina one — which many Accord commuters living in North Augusta or Aiken will have — the state's safety glass deductible provision remains in place through 31 December 2026 and changes on 1 January 2027. See the South Carolina glass deductible change and calibration cost and insurance.

Does every Accord need recalibration?
No — only those with a camera behind the rear-view mirror. On modern Accords that is a great many of them, because Honda has extended its safety suite widely, but older cars and some trims have no windshield camera at all. The ten-second look from the driver's seat is the fastest way to know.
Why does mine need both a target setup and a drive?
Because the manufacturer's procedure for that system says so. The static half establishes the geometric reference in controlled conditions; the road drive confirms and refines it under real conditions. Doing only the easier one is not a shortcut, it is an incomplete procedure.
Can it be done in my office car park?
Frequently yes, and workplace car parks are often better than home driveways for this — flat, marked and with clear space in front of the bay. Low sun straight onto the target area is the usual complication, so time of day can matter for a static procedure.
How much does an Accord windshield cost?
It depends entirely on what the pane has to carry. A common aftermarket windshield with no camera involved tends to land somewhere around $300 to $500 fitted; add calibration and manufacturer glass and the national average is nearer $750. Call with the VIN and we will give you a number for your car rather than a range.
Can you do it the same day?
Often, because Accord glass is high-volume and commonly stocked. What can push it is a less usual specification, or a calibration that needs conditions the weather is not giving us. See same-day replacement and tell us if you have a deadline.
