The Advantage of Driving a Common Car

There are a lot of Camrys in the Augusta metro, and that works in your favour. High production volume means the glass is widely made, widely stocked and quick to source, which is why same-day fitting is realistic on a Camry far more often than on something unusual. Toyota Safety Sense on the Camry

Toyota's driver assistance suite is branded Toyota Safety Sense, and where it is fitted the forward camera sits behind the rear-view mirror looking out through a clear window in the black frit border. It handles lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, the pre-collision system and automatic high beams.

Toyota has pushed this package across a very large share of its range in recent years, including down to entry trims, so a Camry that feels basic in other respects can still have a camera. The pre-collision system on many Toyotas pairs the windshield camera with a radar unit at the front of the car. The radar is unaffected by a glass change. The camera is not.

Head-Up Display on Upper Trims

Toyota has offered a head-up display on some Camry trims. HUD glass carries a wedge-shaped interlayer that varies in thickness so the reflections from the inner and outer surfaces of the laminate merge into one image rather than two. It looks like ordinary glass and it is not.

Fitting a standard pane to a HUD car gives a permanently doubled, ghosted projection that cannot be adjusted, calibrated or lived with. The check takes five seconds: drive at night and see whether speed appears to hover over the bonnet. If it does, say so before anything is ordered.

What Calibration Involves

If your Camry has a camera behind the mirror, the glass replacement is not finished until the camera is recalibrated. It is aimed relative to a bracket bonded to the old windshield, and the new pane sits at a fractionally different height and rake in fresh urethane. The camera's sense of straight ahead is now slightly wrong and nothing on the dashboard is going to tell you.

Catch the Chip and Avoid All of It

A repaired chip means the original glass stays in the car. No new pane, no camera disturbed, no calibration. On a Camry with Toyota Safety Sense that is by far the cheapest good outcome, and it is available only while the damage is still a chip.
